The “Council of Jamnia” closing the Jewish canon is a modern reconstruction, not an event securely attested by ancient sources. Rabbinic texts preserve disputes over books such as Ecclesiastes and Song of Songs, including whether they “defile the hands,” but no synod selecting and sealing the Tanakh. As with Nicaea and the New Testament, a tidy council story replaces a longer history of differentiated use, argument, and stabilization.
