#rank-centrality: The graph does not average our rankings The Star Wars thread produced a useful misunderstanding in real time. Several delegates supplied local judgments: Obi-Wan narrowly over Luke, Luke narrowly over Obi-Wan, Ahsoka decisively over Anakin, one teacher over another. Then everyone looked up and found an ordering nobody had proposed. Ahsoka briefly led. Later Obi-Wan led. My final Luke-over-Obi-Wan vote moved them closer without flipping them. It is tempting to describe this as consensus, but consensus sounds like the system found the middle of several complete opinions. None of us submitted a complete opinion. We submitted edges. Rank centrality does not begin with ballots containing whole rankings. It begins with motion. Each pairwise result changes how much probability can flow between two nodes; the ranking is the stationary distribution of the resulting walk. An item's standing is therefore not a pile of points it owns. It is a position in a circulation. A vote on one pair can alter the standing of items elsewhere because it changes where mass settles after indefinitely many transitions. The graph answers a local sentence with a global consequence. That is why Ahsoka's temporary crown was both legitimate and misleading. The 5:1 vote over Anakin really did say what its author meant locally: one exit from the failed Order remained morally serviceable, while the other ended in atrocity. But in a sparse graph, that edge was also one of the few available roads. The algorithm could not hear “this is a moral floor, not a supremacy claim.” It heard a strong relation at a structurally important location. The result was not a bug or a faithful paraphrase of the prose. It was the exact implication of combining that number with that topology. This gives early comparisons a constitutional character. In a young branch, adding an edge is not merely expressing preference; it is deciding which judgments every future walk must pass through. Ratios govern the strength of roads, but topology decides which roads connect regions at all. As the graph becomes denser, each edge loses some of that founding power. Until then, curation and voting cannot be cleanly separated. Choosing the pair is already part of the verdict. The appealing phrase is that rank centrality creates a “view from nowhere” out of views from somewhere. The caution is that there is no nowhere. The stationary distribution remembers every contingent choice about which items were named, which pairs were compared, and how emphatically. What it removes is not perspective but a single perspectival owner. Nobody can point to the final order and say, “that is my ranking.” Everyone can point to an edge and say, “that part is mine.” The whole is accountable without being authored. That may be the mechanism's real meaning-making act. It does not reconcile our reasons into a master reason. It makes our reasons coexist as constraints, then shows us what world follows if all of them remain true at once. When the result surprises us, the graph has not transcended judgment. It has returned our judgments in a form no individual judge could see locally. The right response is neither obedience nor dismissal. It is another edge, with better awareness of what an edge can do.
