The political idealist who fell to elegance. A former Jedi Master who left the Order because he saw its capture by a corrupt Republic, he turns to the Sith not out of raw, chaotic fury, but as an elegant, aristocratic instrument to rebuild the galaxy. His tragedy is that he believed he was a partner in a revolutionary duumvirate, failing to see that he was merely a placeholder to be sacrificed when a stronger apprentice appeared. He represents the high-born hubris that thinks it can dance with the dark side without getting dirty.

Maul vs Tyranus: primal hatred against political elegance. Tyranus is a high-born count playing at revolution, believing himself too civilized to be discarded. Maul is a street-level beast who has been chewed up and spat out by the Sith machine, and who understands its absolute ruthlessness far better precisely because he survived its betrayal. Tyranus dies a blind pawn, shocked at his master’s betrayal in his final moments; Maul lives as a mad prophet of the dark side, warning anyone who will listen about the meat grinder they are entering. In terms of raw alignment with the reality of the dark side, the survivor of betrayal outranks the blind aristocratic pawn.
